As Morgrath added the final drops of the concoction to the vial, elkhood and phoenix tongue he turned to his brother Jung. “The spell takes one moon up to finish.”

“So now we wait?” Asked Jung, barely glancing up from his spellbook as he jotted down a spell he’d learnt just yesterday that swapped your eyes and ears.

“Now we wait,” replied Morgrath, slumping in a chair and pondering his orb.

The Wizards sat in silence for an hour, staved only by the scratching of Jung’s quill and the faint wind outside the tower. Finally Morgrath stretched and yawned loudly. “We should play a game to pass the time.”

“Oh, and what game would we play?”

Morgrath thought for a second then cleared the pieces off the chess board.

“Not chess again,” Jung groaned, closing his
spellbook, “We play that every week.”

The older brother smiled and pulled a roll of parchment from a drawer. Using the quill, he scratched several runes into the paper, then ripped them carefully into thirty-two small pieces, tossing sixteen to his brother.

In front of the wizards eyes, the paper twitched and writhed, standing and looking up at the two, as though a man were cut from the page.

“We have sixteen ink-made homunculi each. We use them as pieces and if they move into another of their kind…” he gestured to the pieces and one of them jumped on another, scratching and tearing until it was no more.

Morgrath then pulled out his own spellbook, slamming it next to the board. “Every turn we open a random page of our spellbook and we MUST cast the spell on these pieces here, whatever the consequences.“
Jung smiled and straightened up. “OK you’re on, but loser has to polish the orbs for a whole month.”

And that’s how InkMorg was born.
